Perfect end to what sounds was a perfect day from the start!
:iconwildplaces:
Yes - it was at the end of our 4 days away - on our way back into Sydney.
:iconicedreamer56:
Did your mum enjoy the break away? Did you come from down that way originally?
:iconwildplaces:
I was born in Albury. My parents had been at the Bonegilla migrant camp at Wodonga. I took her down there to catch up with an old friend and to walk around the migrant camp and other places she knew.
:iconicedreamer56:
wow! Where did they migrate from? When did you leave Albury? What was it like for her to go back to the camp? Good memories I hope!
:iconwildplaces:
My dad was Russian; my mum Austrian. Migrated after the war - 1949. . . I was born the next year and we left Albury for Sydney a couple of years later, so I have no memories of it. . . I took her back there a couple of years back and it was very nostalgic, as it was again this time. . . My dad's not around any longer so she has a lot of their early memories associated with the place.

What a massive thing to happen to them to travel so far away from their homeland. They must've gone through hell during the war years.
Sorry to here about your dad. So your mum likes going back then?
Have you ever been to seen where they came from?

Gee I just thought. I'm being bloody nosey, aren't I? Sorry!

I can't help myself. There's a story here about things I've never experienced & I love to here first hand what it was like for those that have! Sorry!

I've been trying to talk my mum into taking another trip back to Austria. She hasn't been for many years. But she's got too many painful memories there and probably won't. . . I've never seen the places they came from. I hope to do so one day.

I can understand why she wouldn't want to return. It must've been horrible beyond belief.
I've a friend whose father was Polish. He passed about 5 years ago now. My friend found out after his dad died about his father's time during the war. He also found there was a different name on his fathers papers to the name they used. I can't say much more but I think you can work it out but involved the underground!
Neither of his parents ever said anything. He's tried to find out more but keeps runnning into brick walls. Must be weird to know that your dad was not exactly who you thought he was.
